LG has launched its SL80 series of thin-panel and slim models. The LG SL80 Series has sleek, compact and elegant design. The HDTVs this series are equipped with shiny glass screen on the front marked. The LG 47SL80 lacks comprehensive and interactive features such as on other television sets displayed in this price range. The picture quality is short and there are some blacks in the picture, not deep. The glass window of the SL 80 reflects ambient light. If you have a good design and would rather compromise on these issues, we recommend the green light for this panel.
LG has improved the remote control for its high-end SL80 series. The remote control has more room, back-lit and logically grouped buttons. We estimate that most of the functions had dedicated buttons, except that, for aspect ratio. However, the similar shape and size of all keys is not good from an ergonomic standpoint. You can click on “Energy Saving” button, to offer energy-saving graphics on the HDTV. The remote control of LG 47SL80 is able to take control of HDMI new transmission, while the remote controls of other TVs do not have such ability.
LG 47SL80 series has fairly extensive menu system that easily accessible menu for sound modes, timer, picture, aspect ratio and other frequently used functions has. The main menu is similar to earlier models of the past year. It has a new addition – simple manual that basic function and setup is available. We would like to see on the screen explains basic and advanced options in the menu.

LG 47SL80 missing and extensive interactive features, such as LG found LH50 models, but its basic function is similar to that of LG LH55 series including 240Hz refresh rate to combat blur in motion. There are two forms of 240Hz refresh rate and LG employs “scanning backlight” form, to double the usual technique of 120Hz at 60 frames-standard signal expanded with a backlight. It flashes quickly and reduce the blurring in motion. Both Toshiba and Vizio employ this technique. The other quadruple 240Hz technology for the standard signal is in the models from Samsung and Sony are used to provide better results as LG, Toshiba and Vizio.
The implementation of the LG SL80 series of de-judder processing is quite similar to its previous 120Hz and 240Hz display. If you select the option to reduce the blurring in motion, force SL80 series then you access only to the de-judder smoothing effect as in previous models. The 2009 models from Toshiba and Samsung makes the separation of these two options of 240Hz. The SL80 series offer two levels of de-judder – Low and High. It also has separate “Real Cinema” option, works with 1080p/24.
LG SL80 Series picture controls that are similar to other LG TVs. Last year, LG has introduced some adaptations, such as Picture Wizard. This wizard is used to support internal test patterns for you to choose basic calibration controls for lighting, vertical and horizontal sharpness, hue, contrast and brightness. You can select options in one of the eight-Expert picture slots.
An independent input is assigned for each image space. This group of eight expert Slots has two slots for the storage of default settings. Intelligent Sensor is the ninth mode, picture parameter sets and react to light according to ambient temperature. The non-expert mode has advanced controls including three color temperature presets for noise reduction, dynamic color and contrast, black level control, standard and wide color areas, three levels of gamma, edge enhancement and room lighting sensor. There is also an eye-care setting in non-expert mode, which prevents the screen too bright. This setting is disabled in the cinema and Vivid mode.

Imaging Science Foundation expert modes has more controls. Our favorite control is 10-point white balance to ensure accurate grayscale, which was presented by LG have last year. LG has functions for the internal test patterns, gamma value of 2.2 and color filters for red-only, has hired only green-and blue-only color balance. It is a color management system on the tap. We want to apply the option of expert settings one at a time or all inputs. Most settings will appeal HDTV geeks and pro-standards, but not attractive normal end users. However, LG’s new models offer the complete package of user-menu picture settings.
LG has announced the effectiveness of the SL80 series. We found the same in our tests. LG has included both store-demo and home-use settings as Energy Star 3.0. In addition, there are the energy saving settings to reduce the backlight, the light output and power consumption savings. This setting disables the default control of the backlight.
The SL80 series do not have picture-in-picture option, but different aspect ratio controls, including five modes for HD sources and four modes for standard-definition. There are two modes for adjustable zoom and a set-by-program mode to select the aspect ratio setting automatically based on signal. There is also a just-scan mode with 1080i and 1080p to assure zero over-scan and the proper 1:1 pixel ratio for SL80-series model with 1080p display.
The connectors on SL80 series is very large because of the four HDMI ports – one on the side and three on the back. The back has an AV input with composite video, two component-video input, one RF input for cable or antenna, an RS-232 port for custom installation, an optical digital audio port and an RGB-style analog PC input. The side wall has fourth HDMI port, a USB port and the second AV input with composite video. The USB port is used for playback of MP3 music files and digital photos. The only connection component for S-video input is missing.

During the test, SL80 LG-Series is a good performance, numerous settings, good video processing and brilliant colors is provided. However, the bright LCD screen tends to the ambient light to collect worse than ground glass.
The screen layout of the LG SL80 series has exactly original settings, controls and standards, the experts both in cinema and Expert modes include. 10-point IRE system has helped to bring grayscale finished to an extremely shallow level and with similar flat gamma. LG SL80 series was completely blue at 5% as other conventional LCD TVs. However, primary and secondary colors were superb. In addition, the color decoding was nice.
We played a movie “The Dark Knight” on Blu-ray disc on LG SL80-series with some LCD TVs to Samsung LN52B750, Sony KDL-52XBR9, Mitsubishi LT-46 249, LG and Pioneer PRO-111FD 47LH59 plasma.
The shadow detail was good, but seemed the background and black color brighter than other displays. The difference between the SL80 series and other LCD TVs with the exception that LG LH50 appeared visibly darker.

The LG SL80-series dissolved 700-800 lines of motion resolution in our test of whether the TruMotion 240Hz was set to either high or low. However, Sony and Samsung 900-1000 resolved lines for testing. LG 47SL80 registered lines 300-400 after disabling the processing of LG, was that a standard 60-Hz LCD TV. The motion blur seen in test images was difficult to observe in real environment. It is impossible to obtain better resolution of the anti-motion-blur effect, without having to de-judder processing.
The movement looked like the video even in low settings, which corresponds to the standard at Samsung and Sony was. The artifacts were no longer as low-mode, but they appeared more frequently in high mode. The amount of artifacts in SL80-series is more than the call to Samsung and Sony with their Smooth and high modes. We recommend you disable TruMotion 240Hz while watching movies on LG 47SL80.
LG 47SL80 delivered completely de-interlaced video-based sources with each line of the static resolution. LG 47SL80 model predicts average uniformity on the screen with small dark areas in corners and edges, but there was no backlight or bright spots. The off-angle view was all-out on LG SL80 series, but not washed on Sony and Samsung. The glossy screen showed the reflections of each bright object such as lamps, windows and even light fabric and accessories worn by us. However, the LH50 LG and Sony had better focusing screen, which did not so much. LG SL80 Black Series does not save layers in ambient light better than dull models.
LG SL80 series delivered fine performance with standard definition. LG 47SL80 resolved every line of the DVD format. The noise reduction also works well. LG 47SL80 worked well with computer sources and delivered each line resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixel input with no edge enhancement nor-through both VGA and HDMI scan.
LG 47SL80 was efficient in defaults and averaged in bright image as compared to other models. It worked better than plasma and non-LED-based models.
